Making Our Extra Years Happy Years

Jan 12 2018 by Fred Bartlit

Today, we live far longer than our parents. When my father was born, his life expectancy was 40 years. Today, many people now in their 50s will live to be 90 years old.

This is an amazing gift of almost five decades of extra life.

But the reality is, for many, a big chunk of those extra years are a miserable downward spiral devoid of happiness.

According to a recent article in the New York Times:

  • Falls are the #1 cause of injury to elderly each year.
  • One in three people over 65 have a fall each year.
  • Of these who fall, 32,000 die every year.

These falls initiate a downward spiral of unhappy aging: a fall resulting in bed rest seriously erodes our strength. Less strength means less activity, leading to a cycle of more falls and a fearful avoidance of going outside the home.

This downward spiral of frailty can make those extra five decades of life miserable. The cure is activity targeted at increasing our strength.
